I have no reason to shoot any bow over 55lbs. The are no Mammoths or Dragons left. 8)
Oh! There is a very good reason to shoot heavy bows, even without dragons and mamoths. Actually two. First it's fun to hear the impact.
Second, the more practical one: Training. If you train with a higher drawweight it's easier to shoot a lower drawweight acurately.
I can't really claim, that I shoot my 90pounder acurately but still it's fun and it helps me with the 70pounder I shoot regularly.
Haben ist besser als brauchen.

But there is also reasonable to shoot not too heavy bows, last spring I wanted to shoot my 60# bow and now I have pain in my shoulder, it cost me half a year to get rid of it.

We are all different, for some 50# is enough and someone shoot much heavier bows.

I have been a top ten USA Selfbow shooter for a decade. My elk bows are heavy and they do nothing for making me a better target shooter. As to making heavy bows. They are much easier to make than a light one. You have about 1/5 the tillering and weight reduction accomplish. Most folks have gone to lighter bows just because of the effeciency of new bow equipment.

I have no reason to shoot any bow over 55lbs. Have I, yes shot kickstand bows for years 65-70lbs until I woke up and realized a 50lb bow will do everything the 70lb one would.

Not even sure why a topic like that would even come up on a selfbow build thread?

Carry On

Hi,HH,
maybe Threads drift somewhere, it's usual here. ;)
And in many ways, interesting and giving some more knowledge.
Maybe it's a small cultural difference between America and Europe.
We've been using here bows for thousands of years for Hunting, War (the reason for bows exceeding 70# ::) )and Fun,not Hunting only. ;)
I am just looking at it from Stoneage-Point-of-View... some Extra-oomph and longer distances to the Target might have made the way here to bows being between 55-65#.
They had good Reason to do it that way.
It comes out of the things you have to bring the Bacon home.
It's like looking at Spearthrowers on different continents,so called "Atlatl-Spears". In Australia spears were much longer and heavier, than in Europe. In Europe, there were Stonepoints and Feathers, lesser weight.. same effect on impact :D
Just my point of view,

Can you legally kill anything with a bow where you live? I can and do. 55lbs selfbow will kill and has killed the largest Kodiak bears in North America. I speak from experience not theory mostly. I can see if you distance shooter and want to shoot in unlimited class for distance shooting and shooting a 100-120lb war bow. For most guys you shoot what you can shoot the most accurate. ;)

The new 68" Osage cut off my farm is ready for the forms and some straightening. Should make a fine bow for the High Country. Has that nice Orangey color.

Hi, the rings look very thin, do you use the first ring after the sapwood?

No usually never do that. Think I peeled off 6-8 rings on this stave. I dont care much how thin rings are but rather the Ration of early wood to late wood. This one has 50:50 which normally is not ideal but this tree I cut has made fantastic bows this was a big tree. I went down till I found some rings that were hard chase because they were really stuck hard on the next lower ring.

Started on a 26yr old piece of Osage. Should make a really nice 68" bow. Wood is very springy. Had to build up in grip area. has a natural sight window for a right hand shooter. Wood is very springy.

First brace on this new Osage. Looks good for a first brace up. Make a very nice shooter. Time for tiller on out to 28"

Do you floortiller? I would prefer the limbs to bend more evenly before stringing and tillering. But i work with whitewoods mostly and so i try to narrow down the time when the forces are spread unevenly on the wood. Maybe Osage is not that sensitive in that matter?

Like to get a string on early. Yes, you must floor tiller so you don't have a very uneven first brace. By getting a string on it early with a lot of weight it lets the Osage feel that. Much easier to hit your target pull weight. The bow is reflexed near the tips, what your seeing here is the uneveness of that reflex affecting the profile some what. This is a low brace only 4.5" or so.

In this photo you can see inner third is bending some but mid and outer limb not as much. Will be relatively easy to bring into good tiller without missing bow weight this way.

This is a character bow as it has plenty pin knots and limbs were vertically and horizontally wavy. Had to be flattened then moved left and right. Has ten heat treatments on form to this point. Was worth it for a 26yr old stave of Osage.

At full brace now. Going slow maintaining positive tiller along the way. Brace is 6" and very heavy at this point. Looking good at still holding reflex nicely.
